Spider-Man 3 has officially started filming which has led to a glut of reports and rumors surrounding actors potentially returning to the franchise.
If it feels like it has been a while since you went to see a Marvel movie at the cinema, that's because it has been. 2020 is set to be the first full calendar year during which an MCU movie hasn't been released in theaters since 2009. Disney plans on making up for that in a big way in 2021, should the virus and the pandemic let it, of course.
One of the four MCU installments released in 2021 if all goes to plan will be Spider-Man 3. Rumors have been rife when it comes to the next Spidey movie, and most of them have revolved around the potential introduction of a multiverse. The seeds were sewn for exactly that during Avengers: Endgame when heroes visited alternate timelines to get back the Infinity Stones.
The belief is that multiple universes will mean multiple Spider-Men. Spider-Man 3 started filming this week and it appears that Jamie Foxx will be returning as Electro, and Alfred Molina as Doctor Octavius. Foxx appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opposite Andrew Garfield, and Molina was the primary antagonist to Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man in the original trilogy almost 20 years ago.
The latest actor rumored to be making a return to the Marvel scene doesn't even require the introduction of a multiverse. According to Murphy's Multiverse, Charlie Cox will be donning his burgundy suit once again and playing Matt Murdock/Daredevil. No one attached to the project has confirmed Cox's return, including Cox himself, but of all the rumored returns so far, this one makes the most sense.
Cox as Daredevil is technically already a part of the MCU. He played the role in the Netflix TV show that was technically taking place in the same universe. The movies were rarely mentioned though, nor did any heroes from them ever appear on the show. Tom Holland's Spidey might well be seeking legal counsel in his next movie though, which is what Murdock does when he's not fighting crime.
